Melbourne has one of the highest standards of living in the world

According to four key global studies, Melbourne has one of the highest standards of living in the world.

Melbourne continues to be rated one of the best cities in the world for expatriates to live in according to a survey conducted by the London based Economist Information Unit. The survey takes into account over 40 factors, across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture & environment, education and infrastructure.

The United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index in late 2006 ranked the Australian quality of life as third in the world, ahead of USA, Canada, Netherlands and Japan. The index is based on measures of standards of living, longevity, health, knowledge and economic factors. In addition, Australia has one of the highest (rank 3rd) life expectancy rates in the world.

William M Mercer, a global consulting group, has consistently rated Melbourne as one of the top 20 cities in the world in terms of quality of life. The study uses measures of political stability, security, economic strengths, access to medical facilities, standards of education, recreational and cultural options, standards of housing and environmental considerations.

Complementing Melbourne's superior quality of life is a positive attitude towards globalisation and a national culture that is open to foreign ideas, according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook 2007.
