Comprehensive defence technical knowledge



Our strong design and technological capabilities have been built upon a long tradition of advanced manufacturing in Melbourne. These capabilities include:

  • military vehicle design, manufacture and support
  • naval shipbuilding and warship design
  • electronic systems design and support, including expertise in complex systems integration
  • munitions and missile systems
  • aerospace design, electronics, manufacture, support and overhaul
  • personal equipment design, including uniforms and body armour

There is also a strong cluster of manufacturing, IT, biotechnology, design and logistics firms in Victoria offering mutually supporting technology applications for the defence sector.

Australia’s largest concentration of aerospace education and training facilities



We have a number of leading defence research and development facilities available for collaborative use, including:

  • The Defence Science and Technology Organisation, which investigates future technologies for defence applications.
  • The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), which has a manufacturing and infrastructure technology focus including microtechnology for radar applications.
  • The University of Melbourne, which has capabilities in network centric warfare and data fusion.
  • RMIT University, which has expertise in photonics research for electronic warfare applications.
  • A Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Advanced Composite Structures, which conducts research into the design and research of advanced composite structures.
  • A Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Microtechnology, which conducts research into micro-manufacturing technologies.
  • Australian Aerospace and Defence Innovations (AADI), which facilitates technology uptake in the defence sector to support Australia’s defence capabilities.

Defence projects at home and abroad



Victorian companies are participating in innovative defence projects across the globe, including:

Joint Strike Fighter program – eleven Melbourne companies are participating in the largest defence procurement project in the world.

Thales Australia is supplying world class military vehicles to the Australian, Dutch and US armed forces.

Tenix Defence is completing the Project Protector program, this involves the delivery of new military vessels for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
