Australia has the highest literacy (rank 1) and one of the highest economic literacy rates (rank 4) in the world according to the World Competitiveness Yearbook in 2007.
Melbourne is well serviced by excellent private and public schools as well as nine public and one private university that provide students with high quality education that encourages creativity and independent thought.
For students wishing to become internationally mobile, the International Baccalaureate is offered by 12 schools within the State.
In 2004, Melbourne had the equal highest number of international students enrolled in its higher educational institutions in Australia and in 2005, The Times ranked The University of Melbourne:
