Victorian defence industry on target

The Minister for Industry and Trade, Theo Theophanous, today released the Defence Industry Roadmap Progress Report 2007 which shows the Victorian defence industry’s gross revenue was over $2 billion and employed over 10,500 people in 2006-07.

“This demonstrates the benefits of a close partnership between government and industry, and our commitment to the full implementation of the defence industry framework A Roadmap for Victoria’s Defence Industries, released in 2006,” Mr Theophanous said.

“The sector has recently notched up some major wins such as Tenix Marine’s contract to build the Navy’s largest-ever ships. The $3 billion amphibious ships contract is worth $500 million to Williamstown and will create more than 500 new jobs at the shipyard.

“Victoria will also benefit from a contract, awarded to Thales, for 250 additional Bushmaster vehicles for the Australian Defence Force, while BAE Systems has been short-listed for AIR 7000 project.
|
“Victoria’s defence industry is providing equipment and technology to Australian and overseas defence forces, with a highly skilled workforce, an advanced manufacturing industry and outstanding R&D sector.
|
“Victoria is world class in aerospace design and manufacturing for global supply chains, military combat vehicles and a leader in naval systems design, engineering, support and ship building.
|
“We aim to build on achievements like these by implementing all Roadmap initiatives.”
|
Mr Theophanous said 13 of the 20 initiatives had already been completed.
|
“This includes the establishment of the Victorian Defence Industry Advisory Council which will advise and guide the State Government on strategies and initiatives which will further develop industries unique capabilities,” he said.
