The United Nations annual Human Development Index has rated Australia as the third most desirable country in which to live for the second consecutive year.
The index, which began in 1990, assesses the state of human development through life expectancy, adult literacy and school enrolment, and income across 177 countries and territories.
Iceland ranked number one in the index, with Norway slipping to second place after six years in the top spot.
Canada and Ireland followed Australia, ranked fourth and fifth respectively, with the USA slipping to twelfth, the UK placed sixteenth and New Zealand at nineteenth.
In most countries, including Brazil, China and India, human development had risen over the last 30 years, but some countries shifted into reverse gear. Of these, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe had lower rates of human development than they did in 1975.
