New Kuala Lumpur post to attract investment in Victoria

20 May 2008

Victoria’s position in the Asia Pacific will be strengthened with a new Victorian Government Business Office set to open in Malaysia later this year.

The Kuala Lumpur office will facilitate new opportunities for Victorian businesses to boost their trade in industries such as health and education.

“Victoria already has a very strong relationship with Malaysia, with more than 7,600 Malaysian students studying in our education system and Monash and Swinburne Universities have established campuses in Kuala Lumpur,” Victorian Minister for Education Bronwyn Pike said.

Minister for Industry and Trade, Theo Theophanous, said the Brumby Government was committed to building stronger links with our neighbours to attract international investment to Victoria and assist local companies to export to new markets.

“The decision to open a new Victorian Government Business Office in Kuala Lumpur will help Victoria maximise the benefits flowing from the continued strength of the Malaysian economy and the broader growth of the Region,” Mr Theophanous said.

The Kuala Lumpur VGBO will be the 12th office worldwide. The Victorian Government operates a network of offices in London, Frankfurt, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nanjing, Dubai, Tokyo and Bangalore.

The Government envisages the new post will have an important role in promoting Victoria’s world-class education system while building fruitful partnerships with one of Asia’s most outstanding economic success stories.
