Victoria has welcomed 48,000 people to the state in the year to September 2007 in its highest ever net overseas migration figures, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Latest data shows Victoria has kept pace with the national average population growth rate of 1.5 per cent and has outpaced New South Wales.

Victoria had the largest population increase over the last quarter of any Australian state, with the arrival of an extra 21,200 people - 13,362 of those hailing from abroad.

Over the year to the September quarter, Victoria’s share of national net overseas migration was 26.9 per cent, which is above Victoria’s population share at 24.8 per cent.
