Victoria recorded a larger increase in jobs than any other Australian state for the month of December, with an additional 12,500 new jobs for the month.
Labour Force data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that over the year to December, the number of people employed in Victoria has increased by 86,400 people, the greatest number of new jobs added of all the states.
The yearly increase in the number of people employed in Victoria has accounted for one-third of the national increase in employment of 261,300.
Treasurer John Lenders said the figures showed Victoria’s continuing economic strength.
“Victoria’s employment increased by 0.5 per cent for December,” Mr Lenders said.
“And for the year to December, our employment growth rate of 3.4 per cent has exceeded the national average of 2.5 per cent,” he said.
Victoria’s unemployment rate dropped in December, down 0.2 percentage points to 4.7 per cent.
“Victoria’s economy continues to show clear signs of being resilient and robust which reflects the Victorian Government’s track record of strong financial management.
“This clearly demonstrates that Victoria remains the best place to live, work, invest and raise a family.”
