Massive increase in business migrants to Victoria

6 May 2007

The number of business migrants coming to Victoria has increased by more than 65 per cent in the past 12 months, further recognition that Victoria's superior lifestyle and abundant opportunities have been successful in attracting skilled workers to the region.

Employment Minister Jacinta Allan said new figures released today show so far in 2006-07 Victoria has sponsored more than 1350 new business migrants, compared to about 800 for the same period in 2005-06.

Business migrants are expected to invest about $600 million and create thousands of jobs in Victoria.

Business owners and investors come from across the globe to exploit Victoria's opportunities, with the leading business migrant source countries being China and South Korea. All industry sectors are represented, from imports, exports, retail, manufacturing and services.

Victoria's Skilled Migration Strategy helped to increase Victoria's share of Australia's skilled migrants to more than 25 per cent in 2005-06. The recent figures indicate the proportion for 2006-07 will be even higher.

A further A$8.4 million has been allocated to the Skilled Migration Strategy in the 2007-08 State Budget, bringing the total investment since 2003 to A$14.4 million.
