AXA announces eSecurity expansion in Melbourne

5 February 2008

In a major business coup for Victoria, AXA Technology Services has chosen Melbourne as the location for one of their global ICT activity hubs, strategically positioned to support initiatives to AXA Asia Pacific.

Melbourne will provide a data centre facility, technical support and an eSecurity Regional Centre allowing AXA Technology Services to provide around the clock support to their clients.

Underpinned by the Victorian Government ICT Industry Plan 2005 – 2010, AXA Tech and the Brumby Government are helping bring the local ICT industry onto the global stage through strategic collaboration.

"AXA’s Regional Centre will develop, maintain and enhance Asia Pacific’s security position, building on Victoria’s growing eSecurity sector,” said the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Theo Theophanous.

Cyber crime problems such as new online viruses and malicious software (Malware), are some the new frontier of internet threats being tackled by online eSecurity developments.

Victoria’s eSecurity industry continues to grow strongly both domestically and internationally, with the Brumby Government last year announcing Microsoft will establish its only Malware Protection Centre Lab in the southern hemisphere in Melbourne.

This was one of a number of measures to bolster and support this specialist ICT area, in addition to $100,000 in government seed funding to establish the state’s eSecurity cluster, SECIA.

“The new AXA operation will also provide a range of technical support in the areas of infrastructure and management process, operations, change management and networking – all of which means more technology jobs for people in Victoria,” Mr Theophanous said.

“The Brumby Government’s continued support of the local ICT industry makes Victoria an ideal location for AXA Tech’s global hub and eSecurity Regional Centre.”

General Manager of AXA Tech Australia Daryl Hergt, said AXA Technology Services plans to further enhance Victoria’s position as an ICT Centre of Excellence.

“Melbourne was chosen not only because of its location but also because there is access to the skills required to support this global strategy,” Mr Hergt said.

Victoria’s ICT industry generates approximately $24.4 billion in annual revenue, representing 25 per cent of the national ICT industry revenue and employs 83,900 people, representing approximately 34 per cent of the national ICT employment.
